How Much Do Muay Thai Classes Cost in Auckland? (The Transparent Price Guide)

By Su-Lin (founder)

If you’ve been scrolling through Google looking for an authentic Muay Thai gym in Auckland CBD, you've probably noticed that things can get confusing quickly. Between hidden fees, rigid corporate contracts, and different class structures, trying to find a clear answer on Muay Thai Auckland prices can feel a bit like a workout in itself.

We believe that your hard-earned money deserves absolute transparency. To help you make the best decision for your fitness journey, your wallet, and your lifestyle, we’re breaking down the honest math of what martial arts training actually costsβ€”and why and how we do things at JAI.

But first, let's travel back in time to where this personal mission started.

The Sacrifice Behind the Sweat: Why We Built JAI

Two decades ago, as a junior magazine writer in Singapore, I had a secret. I was completely obsessed with Muay Thai, but as a junior writer at a magazine, I could barely afford it.

Back then, a single casual class cost SG$50 or NZ$67 (memberships weren't really an option back thenβ€”just a discount for purchasing 100 classes at one go). That single class represented nearly 50% of my daily wage! Because I loved my job but loved Muay Thai just as much, I had to get creative.

To make it work, I walked everywhere. Socialising meant going to clubs or concerts for free (having a press pass helped) or attending media events. I ate eggs and rice... a lot. Fortunately, a major perk of being a journalist meant I could eat like a king for free at press lunches and press events. And I didn't give up my social life, either. Instead of meeting my friends for expensive dinners, I’d head to training first and meet them at the club afterward. I got to stay social, stay fit, and keep practicing the sport I loved.

Later on, after visiting many cramped basement spaces with real estate agents in Singapore, I quickly realised that the physical space required for running a proper martial arts gym came with horribly expensive rents, cramped quarters, or even both. The only way those Asian gyms could survive was by charging massive, premium prices.

This is exactly why I chose to move back home to New Zealand to open our own space. I wanted to build a sustainable model where we didn't have to sacrifice qualified trainers, a spacious central location (with decent bathrooms!), or a daily cleaning team just to keep our expenses down. I wanted to find a sustainable business model where our trainers and team of Muay Thai coaches could make a decent living doing what they loved, while remaining highly affordable and accessible to almost everyone in Auckland who wanted to train with us.

Membership Price (2026 Breakdown)

Since we opened our doors in in 2009, we’ve tested a few different pricing and training structures (including making a bunch of mistakes).

In 2009, our standard weekly membership started at $50 a week. Today in 2026 - after 17 years of inflation, increased commercial rents, and a massive nationwide cost-of-living crisis - our Gold membership is just $39 a week.

We deliberately moved in the opposite direction of the rest of the economy. We didn't just slash our prices, either. We did three things at once:

  1. Prices went down (from $50/week to $39/week).

  2. The number of weekly classes went up (we now run a massive schedule of over 40 classes 7 days a week on our timetable).

  3. We upgraded our physical training space and facilities.

First, let's address the casual option. We price our single casual class at $29. It is intentionally the most expensive way to train with us because we highly reward consistency and commitment. Not only can we guarantee you real physical progress if you show up consistently (which memberships definitely encourage), we are also committed to you because you are committing to support us.

And that’s the exact reason we give when people ask why it’s cheaper to train twice a week on our Silver membership ($28/week) than it is to buy just one casual class ($29). Commitment is a two-way street.

Here is how our flexible, commitment-focused membership options break down on a 6-month term:

  • Gold Membership ($39/week): Our highest-value tier. This allows you to train one class daily.

    • If you train an average of 3x a week, it works out to just $13 per class.

    • If you train daily, it works out to under $6 a dayβ€”less than the price of a daily flat white in downtown Auckland!

  • Silver Membership ($28/week): Perfect for those who want a structured commitment of exactly 2 classes per week (breaking down to $14 per class).

  • Bronze Membership ($21/week): A highly flexible option allowing you to train once a week (breaking down to $21 per class).

Comparing the Value: Minimum Wage vs. Your Daily Flat White

To put this in perspective, let’s look at the real-world value. When I first started training in Singapore, a single class cost me half a day's salary.

Today in New Zealand, with the adult minimum wage at $23.95 per hour, a full weekly Gold Membership at JAI ($39/week) costs the equivalent of 1.6 hours of minimum wage work. You get an entire week of Muay Thai training for less than two hours of work!

We feel that it is a worthwhile investment for a massive return in mental clarity, stress relief, and physical conditioning and hope you do too!

"Wait, How Can You Actually Afford to Do This?" (No Gimmicks, Just Honest Math)

At this point, you might be raising an eyebrow. β€œWait a minute,” you might ask. β€œIn a world where simple groceries cost a fortune and Auckland rents are insane, how can you afford to charge less than you did fifteen years ago? Is this some kind of marketing gimmick?”

It is a completely fair question. And the answer is actually very simple: It’s because of you.

Our entire financial model is built on an important core value: consistency. When you commit to training rain or shine, sticking with us through up days and bad days, you give JAI something incredibly precious - a predictable, stable income. Because we can count on your membership fees every month, we can keep our running costs stable and pass those direct savings straight back to you.

To reward that loyalty, we have enforced this rule for the past 10+ years: once you join JAI, as long as we can sustain it, we don't put your prices up. We have members training on our mats today who haven't had a price increase in over a decade! Only new members pay our current public rates, which we only adjust as much as inflation dictates. It’s our way of saying thank you for your continued support and consistency.

The other part of the equation is that we run an incredibly lean, focused operation.

  • We do everything ourselves: We don’t pay marketing agencies or pushy sales teamsβ€”we handle our own marketing, our own sales, and our own admin.

  • No useless luxury bloating: Believe me, when we were fitting out JAI, I originally wanted to put fancy GHD hair straighteners, fluffy towels and luxury hair products in the changing rooms. But just last month, when a pilates boutique owner disclosed that it costs $4 to professionally wash a single towel, I’m sure glad I didn’t. Those luxury extras would artificially bloat our overheads, without actually making your kick, punch, or cardio any better. So, we said no.

  • Smart Automation: We automate as much administrative work as possible so we rely less on manual credit card processing and manual communication, and more on smart gym management tech. We want to spend our precious hours teaching world-class classes and running a great gym, not sitting behind a desk taking your money.

Is Muay Thai Worth the Investment? Our Philosophy on Cross-Training

As I’ve matured as a martial artist, I’ve also become a fan of cross-training. Over the years, I've personally trained in calisthenics, Pilates, weights and tried some passing fads we shall not get into... But let's be honest: trying to cross-train across multiple boutique studios in Auckland simply isn’t feasible cost-wise. Many specialty fitness spaces charge memberships of up to $70/week, which locks you in and makes you feel guilty if you don't show up 5 days a week to "get your money's worth."

At JAI, we don't believe in penalising you if you can't make it 5 days a week. Our membership tiers are deliberately built to keep your budget safe so you can actually afford to do a couple of Muay Thai sessions as well as keep your strength training up. We'd rather you train twice a week for two years than burn out training every day for two months.

On a side note, we did look into putting in strength and weight-lifting equipment at JAI. However, the sheer cost of the equipment and the massive sacrifice of precious mat space meant it just wasn't feasible. Like the fluffy towel scenario, we'd rather save our floors and our funds to spend on Muay Thai, and let the people who want to lift heavy weights join a dedicated gym for that.

Why We Don't Have Gym Carparks (And Why That Saves You Money)

I made peace with this decision years ago: JAI does not provide dedicated member parking, and that is actually one of the reasons we can keep our membership rates so incredibly affordable.

Let’s look at the raw financial reality of city-center parking. Renting just one secure carpark space opposite our Anzac Avenue gym costs roughly $370 per month.

Because we run over 40 scheduled classes on our weekly timetable, with an average of 15 members per class, we welcome hundreds of training sessions through our doors every single week. Trying to provide "free" parking for that volume of people would require renting dozens of secure spaces, increasing our monthly operational overhead by thousands of dollars - costs that we would have to pass directly onto you by artificially inflating our weekly membership prices.

Instead, we decided to pass those savings straight back to your wallet. There are early morning sessions and classes after 6pm where street parking is FREE. Plus, being located in downtown Auckland CBD means we are exceptionally accessible. We are a flat, scenic 5-minute walk from Britomart Station, surrounded by major bus routes, and perfectly positioned for an active commute - walking, running, or scootering - to help you warm up before class. We keep our rates low, and let you choose how you want to get to us.

The $50 Joining Fee: Your JAI Welcome Pack

Yes, we have a one-off joining fee of $50. But we don't pocket this as a "paperwork fee." We believe in starting your training journey with actual physical value. Your joining fee immediately gets you an official JAI welcome pack valued at $59:

  1. A custom JAI training top printed on premium, durable AS Colour apparel (valued at $40).

  2. A pair of professional, stretchy JAI handwrapsto protect your knuckles during pad work (valued at $19).

We want you to look the part, protect your hands, and feel like an official, supported member of our Auckland community from day one.

All smiles after class

We built JAI for one reason: how you feel when you walk off the mats. Not the Instagram feed. Not the shiny facilities. Not the championship belts our trainers have. The feeling.

Stepping into a gym shouldn't feel intimidating, transactional, or stressful. True martial arts training is about how you feel before you walk onto the mats, and how you feel when you step off them. We created JAI to be an open, inclusive sanctuary for everybody - a space where training genuinely makes you feel better, whether that means walking out feeling more empowered, more confident, or just a whole lot happier than you did when you woke up this morning.

Our ultimate goal is simple: we want every single member to walk out of our doors feeling significantly better than they did walking in.

If you've made it this far, the absolute best way to see if we are the right fit for you is to stop reading and come experience it for yourself. Come step onto the mats, meet our coaches, and feel the vibe.

Your very first JAI 101 class is 100% free.

Muay Thai Auckland: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Muay Thai good for beginners with no fighting experience?

Absolutely! Over 90% of our members at JAI started with zero martial arts experience. Our structured beginner classes are specifically designed to teach you the basic stance, simple footwork, and fundamental strikes in a safe, non-intimidating environment alongside other absolute beginners.

How is Muay Thai different from kickboxing?

While traditional kickboxing primarily focuses on punches and kicks, Muay Thai is known as the "Art of Eight Limbs." In a Muay Thai class, you will learn to use your fists, kicks, knees, and elbows, alongside authentic standing clinch work. This makes Muay Thai a much more comprehensive full-body workout and a highly practical self-defense system. Muay Thai is also a traditional form of combat from ancient Thailand - proven on the battlefield. There is a rhythm and practicality to Muay Thai which makes it known as the most deadly form of standup in the world. And while many professional UFC fighters go to Thailand to learn Muay Thai to improve their strikes, you can learn it right here as a beginner in Auckland with us.

How many times a week should a beginner train Muay Thai?

For beginners, we highly recommend starting with 2 to 3 classes per week (which perfectly aligns with our affordable Silver and Gold membership options). This frequency gives your muscles and joints enough time to adapt to the new training movements while building great cardiovascular fitness and muscle memory.

Is Muay Thai good for weight loss and fitness, even if I never want to fight?

Yes, it is one of the most effective workouts on the planet. A single one-hour class at JAI can burn between 600 to 800 calories while building lean muscle and explosive core power. The vast majority of our members train purely for physical fitness, mental stress relief, and community - you will never be forced or pressured to spar or fight.

Do I need to buy gloves or gear before my first class?

No gear is required for your very first session! We provide freshly sanitized training gloves for all beginners attending their trial class. Once you sign up for a membership, your $50 joining fee includes your own premium stretchy handwraps to keep, and we have high-quality training gloves available to purchase in our pro shop when you are ready.

Is there a lock-in contract at JAI Thai Boxing?

We don't believe in locking people into endless, scary contracts. Our Gold, Silver, and Bronze membership tiers are based on a standard, stress-free 6-month term. This 6-month commitment ensures you stick around long enough to actually see real physical progress, master the fundamentals, and feel the benefits of the sport.

Can I pause or freeze my membership if I travel or get injured?

Yes, absolutely. We know that CBD professionals travel frequently for business, and life happens. You can suspend or pause your active JAI membership for up to 4 weeks per calendar year. Simply send our admin team an email at least 7 days before your trip so we can freeze your billing cycle.

Do you offer student, concession, or corporate discounts?

We keep our prices affordable for everyone! But for casual and concession passes we do offer a 10% student discount. For corporate packages - send us an email at hello@jaithaiboxing.com to find out more.

Where exactly is JAI Thai Boxing in Auckland CBD, and how do I get there without a car?

We are perfectly located in the heart of the city at 76 Anzac Avenue, Auckland CBD. Because we are right downtown, you don't need a car to reach us - we are a quick 5-minute walk from Britomart Train Station and major CBD bus terminals. Many of our members enjoy an active commute by walking, running, or scootering straight to us from their offices.

What should I wear to my first Muay Thai class?

Just wear comfortable, breathable athletic clothing that you can easily move in (like a t-shirt and gym shorts or leggings). We train barefoot on professional mats, so you won't need any special footwear. Don't forget to bring a water bottle and a sweat towel!
