Ready for fight training and sparringRing Craft, then Sparring

You move up when you are ready, not on a schedule. Ring Craft and Sparring both need a trainer to clear you first, and you will need your own safety gear.

Not sure? Start with the beginners page, or just book the free class and we will point you in the right direction on the day.

Before anything else

You do not have to fight

Most of our classes have no sparring at all. Just technique, pads and fitness.

Contact training is optional, supervised, and only when you are ready. Plenty of people train here for years and never spar, and that is a completely normal way to do Muay Thai.

Kit

What you actually need

Gloves and handwraps for every class. For your first one, borrow ours. Gloves are on the shelf and we will get you wrapped and ready before anything starts.

Once you are training regularly you will want your own gloves and a couple of pairs of wraps, so one pair can be in the wash. Sharing gloves is like sharing shoes, and sharing wraps is like sharing socks.

Wraps are $17 at reception and we sell gloves too. That is the whole kit list for most of what we run.

The contact classes ask for a bit more and it is noted on each one below. Shinguards for Ring Craft can be hired.

Wear shorts or leggings and a t-shirt, bring a water bottle and a towel. Bare feet, no shoes on the mats.

JAI 101

FoundationsNo sparringFirst class free

Everyone starts here. Stance, guard, movement, punches, kicks, hand wraps, safe pad holding. Simple things repeated until they stop feeling awkward.

Stay as long as you want and come back any time. Plenty of our advanced members drop back into JAI 101 to sharpen their foundations, so you will not be the only one in the room who knows what they are doing.

Longer combos, finer detail. Longer sequences at a faster pace, plus the details that decide exchanges: fakes, feints, defence, some clinch work.

This is where your technique starts working at speed.

High intensity Muay Thai pad work in a Muay Power class at JAI Thai Boxing Auckland

Advanced

Muay Power

AdvancedNo sparring

Thailand-style intensity. Fast, hard pad rounds with a partner who can hold properly.

The work is sharpening technique and timing rather than learning new moves. Not a fancy-moves class. Ordinary things done well, at pace, until the details are yours.

You will be expected to work independently, with less supervision than our other classes. That is the point of it, and it is why we ask for a good level of fitness and technique before you join.

Not your average box-fit. A fun boxing class for people who want a chance to focus on the sweet science.

Guided Open Training

All members

Is there something you want to work on, either alone or with a partner? This is the perfect time to do it.

There will be trainers to guide you, partners to buddy up with, and up to two hours to make that one thing at least 1% better.

All members are welcome. It is a great chance to share skills and experience.

Progression

How you move up

Two ways, and neither of them is time served.

A trainer tells you. Most of the time this is it. Trainers watch you in normal classes, and when you are ready for the next one they say so.

Skills Testing. A grading session we run about four times a year, open to members who have been training consistently. You get graded on what you are killing it in and what you still need to work on, and plenty of people come out of it being told they can level up.

It is not a pass or fail. It is a progress report.

The most useful part is usually the list of things to work on, and you get that whether you level up or not.

Times

When each class runs

The timetable changes week to week, so rather than list times that go stale, check the live timetable and book the one that suits you.

Still not sure which one?

Start with JAI 101, it is free. Already trained somewhere else? Talk to a trainer and we will put you in the right class.

No pressure to spar. Ever.
